This project analyzes Bangladesh’s export performance to Japan, highlighting both its strengths and untapped potential for diversification. While Bangladesh has significantly expanded its global export capacity, its exports to Japan remain limited and highly concentrated in a small number of products—primarily apparel and a few non-apparel goods such as leather items, footwear, seafood, and machinery parts. The study finds that a large share of exports is dominated by a narrow product base, indicating structural constraints in fully utilizing Japan’s market.
Importantly, the project identifies several high-potential products where Bangladesh is globally competitive but has not yet penetrated the Japanese market. These opportunities span agricultural goods, industrial materials, chemicals, and manufactured items, offering clear pathways for export diversification. Overall, the project underscores the need to broaden Bangladesh’s export basket to Japan, reduce reliance on apparel, and strategically expand into new product categories to strengthen trade relations and long-term economic growth.
